A new report from the government described a decreasing number of birds in Hawaii. Following parts of this article will discuss this issue clearer.
An endangered bird species of Hawaii
A report named The State of Birds of the United States of America 2009 done by the U.S. Department of the Interior confirmed that one- third of the number of endangered birds in America are native birds of Hawaii. Hawaii has 31 bird species in the list of endangered one and the number of these endangered in Hawaii is much more larger than any locations in the United States.
The head of one among sponsors of the research, the Cornell Laboratory
of Ornithology, John Fitzpatrick stated that Hawaii almost was the center of extinctions and it seemed to be a borderline case of ecological damage.
To explain Hawaii case, it is believed that 2 factors consisting of predators and damage of habitat contribute significantly to the issue. Besides predators and habitat, lack of food sources is another factor having a serious influence of lives of the bird species. Food sources for these species such as seed pods of mamane trees, which are delicious to palila birds, are reduced quickly due to animals, and diseases. The animals such as pigs or feral sheeps like to graze the bark and shoots of mamane trees, so these trees can not survive.
Palila birds, one of precious bird species, belong to song-bird type. This kind of bird is yellow, and palila birds like to create home on higher hills of Mauna Kea. The number of palila has decreased significantly out of expectation. In 2002, the number of this kind of bird is approximately 7, 000, but in 2008, its number is dropped over 60 percent, about 2,200. In order to restore and conserve the habitat of birds, the Fish and Wildlife Service is going to establish a fence, keep a private place of them, and remove harmful animals such as sheep or goats from that place. The organizations hope to restore the number of birds and make them develop.
The Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge has succeed in restoring the habitat by applying similar strategies including installing fences, take pigs away, get rid of species of invasive plants, and growing trees providing food sources for species. Hence, population of endangered bird species has positive signals of increasing. A report of the Interior Department highlighted the increase in number of birds named akia polaau and Hawaii creeper after restoration strategies have employed. The report also requires people to work harder to restore other places of Hawaii.
Based on Scott Fetz working at Division of Forestry and Wildlife of Hawaii, people have being tried to save, restore, and develop endangered species in the list. However, on of the most difficulty of restoration plan is money. The climate is changing and it brings more problems to restoration process. For instance, warm weather makes mosquitoes invading other places where other species are staying. These mosquitoes make the species sick, and do harm to birds’ lives. Therefore, Fetz hopes to be supported more finance.
