Young adult novels have grown in popularity with many authors choosing to write for this group, as there are many engaging plots and themes one can create a story from. Young adult novels cut across many genres that they can relate to from science fiction, fantasy, romance, paranormal, coming of age fiction among other genres and sub genres. Though any adult can read good novels for young adults, when a novel is declared a young adult novel, what exactly should be expected to ring loud and clear in it?
Adolescents prefer to read about and identify with people their own age. Therefore good novels for young adults should have protagonists or main characters that are the same age as the people for whom the books are written for. They should be able to portray the realistic thinking and activities of a young adult in that age going through issues that a typical adolescent goes through.
Setting for the Young Adult Novel
Good novels for young adults ought to be set in an environment natural for such age groups to identify with. Such settings could be a school, college, their home or social gatherings where they meet their friends and catch up on teenage activities. This way the novel will not seem far fetched for the reader since the experiences faced by the main character might slightly resemble their own background even if not in reality. The Harry Potter series by J.K Rowling was set in a school even if what the characters learnt there was anything but what is learnt in typical school in the real world!

As opposed to adults who would prefer content in mature language, young adults do not mind a novel that contains language they will easily understand and relate to in their daily lives. Good novels for young adults will contain language that is commonly spoken by teenagers even if it breaks the rules of good syntax. After all, the protagonist and the supporting characters are mainly teenagers who should be expected to converse in normal teenage language.
Young Adults novels have been written through the ages by well known authors such as Mark Twain, who wrote Tom Sawyer and the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn as well as Charles Dickens, author of Oliver Twist and David Copperfield. All the main characters in these novels are in their adolescent age undergoing the vagaries of teenage life during the age the novels were written.
